O-1 visa evidence checklist
Updated October 29, 2026
Start with records you can verify, rather than a target page count. This checklist helps organize O-1A evidence; an item on the list does not by itself establish eligibility.
Organize evidence by criterion
Nationally or internationally recognized awards
Useful records: Award certificate, selection rules, scope and recognition of the award.
Weak record: A participation certificate without evidence of excellence or recognition.
Gather first: Get the award rules and official recipient record first.
Selective memberships
Useful records: Admission rules requiring outstanding achievements judged by recognized experts, and your admission record.
Weak record: Membership available to anyone paying dues.
Gather first: Get the bylaws, selection process and expert qualifications.
Published material about you and your work
Useful records: Professional or major trade publications or major media coverage, with title, date, author and context.
Weak record: A company mention that does not discuss you or your work.
Gather first: Save the full article and evidence of the publication’s audience.
Judging the work of others
Useful records: Records showing you actually judged others’ work in the same or an allied field, individually or on a panel.
Weak record: An invitation without proof that judging occurred.
Gather first: Gather completion confirmations, program details and your role.
Original contributions of major significance
Useful records: Specific personal contributions supported by adoption, use, independent analysis and verifiable field impact.
Weak record: A patent or product launch without evidence of significance.
Gather first: Identify one contribution, who used it and what changed.
Scholarly articles
Useful records: Authorship of scholarly articles in the field, in professional journals or other major media, with full publication records.
Weak record: A promotional blog presented as a scholarly article.
Gather first: Gather full texts, authorship records and publication context.
Critical or essential capacity
Useful records: Duties and outcomes showing a critical or essential role for organizations or establishments with distinguished reputations.
Weak record: A senior title without proof of responsibilities, outcomes or organizational reputation.
Gather first: Gather role records, concrete outcomes and independent reputation evidence.
High salary or other remuneration
Useful records: Reliable records of compensation commanded or to be commanded, compared with others in the field using an explained benchmark.
Weak record: Company valuation or equity percentage treated as personal salary.
Gather first: Separate salary, bonus and equity; gather contracts and relevant comparison data.
Build a traceable evidence index
For each claim, record the criterion, date, source, your personal role, supporting exhibit and remaining gap. Preserve full source context and obtain appropriate translations for non-English records. Avoid duplicate exhibits that add volume without new support.
Beyond achievements, the filing package may need petitioner records, contracts or a summary of an oral agreement, work/event details, an itinerary where applicable, and a consultation unless an exception applies. The final filing requirements depend on the case and current I-129 instructions.
